So far, Southern California has been an absolute BLAST! I’m loving the people, food, fashion, and sub-cultures like crazy, and it honestly reminds me a lot of Miami, so I feel right at home. I snagged these sandals and sunnies today at the local TJ Maxx (I know, I can’t help myself!) and sat down with my hubs to enjoy a Mexican popsicle or, as I like to call them, Mexipops!
I know this outfit is quite similar to my last post, but what can I say – I’ve seriously been digging stripes lately and can’t resist a good festival short! I mixed things up by switching out my headscarf for a felt hat in a nice color and swapped my t-strap sandals for some super comfy slides.

So it’s official – we’re residents of Southern California! We are absolutely loving it so far, especially since it shares way more similiarites with Florida than Raleigh did. The timing was absolutely perfect because the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing is taking place and we have been able to catch some of the heats!!! I have been waiting for the right time to pick Sugar & Shine back up, and it’s finally here. This year has been quite rough so far, but things are definitely looking up and I’m excited for the months to come! Here are some of the highlights from our first few days here:

San Diego was an absolute blast, and I have to say that one of my favorite things we did there was visit the San Diego Zoo! I only managed to get one shot of my whole outfit during our day there, but it was so comfortable and I felt absolutely Cali-licious. California has absolutely stolen my heart, and I hope to call Southern California home within the next year (eek!). Our trip was filled with a plethora of adventures, and I hope to better detail what I learned on our trip soon for all of you!

This girl just turned 24, and I have to say that I finally feel like I am beginning to come into my own! I know everyone always says that college is the time when you find yourself, but I honestly think that you refine who you are in the years after college. I am truly thankful for all the people in my life that have helped make me who I am, and I have to say that I think sometimes those people that were in your life for a limited time can have a seriously lasting impact (in a good way!).
Here I’ve gathered a few of my favorite “words of wisdom” for you all, in honor of this week! (click through for sources)

Guess what – I’m baaaaaack! The past month or so has been particularly difficult for my family, and unfortunately I needed to take some time off to cope with the loss of two family members. Nevertheless, I am officially back and stoked for all the spring and summer fashion that has already been hitting the shelves! I’m keeping this post short and sweet, but be on the lookout for more posts going live soon!!!

I can finally say it: I am done with my first semester of graduate school! I know I’ve been MIA for the last week or so, but I have to say that finals week was brutal. Now that I’ve survived finals, I can enjoy this beautiful holiday season! I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe Christmas is just two weeks away, and I am so thankful that I’ve finished my Christmas shopping already.
I’ve always loved chambray, and recently I have experimented with the whole denim-on-denim look. One thing I’ve learned is that it’s good to visually break up the denim pieces so you don’t have a Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake effect – I KNOW you know what I’m referring to 😉 I decided to layer a cute vest over my chambray button-down and top it all off with my favorite felt hat to add a little more color. Super comfy and cute, right?

I avoided button-down shirts like the plague in high school and college – to me they represented stuffiness and endless hours of being uncomfortable (and the inevitable peep-show that would ensue since I’m a bustier lady). Thankfully, I decided to give my old rival another chance, and I have fallen in love with them! Honestly, button-down shirts are so versatile and classic, and the whole fit issue can be fixed by simply trying on enough brands to figure out what works best for you. There are definitely more options today than there were a few years ago, too – everything from cotton to chiffon, which makes button-downs even more versatile! I love that you can channel a variety of different characters through clothing, and this staple can take you from Audrey Hepburn to Risky Business to Angelina Jolie in a heartbeat.

Growing up, I always admired the style of Cher Horowitz and Dionne from Clueless. Since I’m a 90s girl, I decided to channel my inner Cher and update one of her best loved looks. Honestly, it’s the knee socks that take this slightly back to 1995, but that’s half the fun right?! Keeping the colors neutral is key in updating this look so it becomes a bit more new-school school-girl than time warp.
In honor of this Clueless themed post, here are some of my favorite outfits from the movie (click through for links):
And, in the ultimate tribute to Clueless (and to completely top off this Clueless themed post), here’s a little something to make your day even brighter:

If you’re like me, you totally associate fall and winter with flannels – especially plaid flannels! I love a good boyfriend flannel, but it can be hard to style if you have a super short torso and you’re a shortie like me. I mean, I love a good grunge look, but an oversized shirt can make me look absolutely horrible due to my size (I’m 5’3″ with long legs and a suuuuuper short torso). Then I made a discovery: tying the front tails! It’s a great way to make your favorite oversized shirt look more tailored and proportionally appropriate. I know, I know it’s a simple fix, but it makes all the difference in the world!
