1. Plaid – I am obsessed with plaid this season, and I have been searching for the perfect flannel!  This Zara flannel would be a great addition to your closet this fall.

2. Leopard Pumps – With cold weather comes the need for closed-toe shoes, and leopard is a fabulous semi-neutral.  I practically live in my leopard flats, but have yet to snag a pair of great leopard pumps.  I love that the silhouette of these Ivanka Trump pumps resembles that of a court shoe.

3. Distressed Black Skinnies – I have yet to purchase a pair of distressed jeans, mostly because the fading can be so hit or miss, but I love these distressed black skinnies.  They add a little extra texture to an outfit without appearing over-distressed.

4. Bling – Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and ear cuffs are a punk-y option to spruce up an outfit this season.  As you cover yourself in more material this fall, why not cover yourself with more bling?

5. Cobalt Handbag – I love a great statement bag, and Rebecca Minkoff’s ladylike totes have stolen my heart.  The bright color is well balanced with its simple design, which makes it great for mixing with lots of patterns!

You always hear people say that New Yorkers are renown for wearing black all day, every day, and I honestly think I might be a New Yorker at heart.  I would wear all black all the time, but I’ve had a recent love affair with bright red clothing – I guess that makes me black, white and red all over!  Honestly, I think that the simplicity of black enables you to experiment with different textures and fabrics in a way that is gorgeous and timeless.  Plus, you can add a fun color to an all black ensemble and break it up if you want to change it up every now and then.

Some days you just need to wear a big sweater, boyfriend jeans, and a beanie.  Enough said.

My journey through graduate school thus far has caused me to focus a bit more on decorating my home.  I mean, a beautiful dress is great, but wearing that dress in a well-decorated home is quite satisfying.  I get tired of the mundane things in my daily and academic life, so I’ve decided to spruce things up!  Nothing could make an early morning class better than a super cute coffee cup and, call me a geek, but seeing a bow paper clip in the early morning would absolutely make my day.  It’s always great to make a stylish appearance in class, and this Kate Spade iPad keyboard and party cuff are perfect!  One of the best parts of a long day in school is coming home, and I definitely think I’ll have to pick up these MR. and MRS. highball glasses and Kate Spade candle.  Here’s to living a stylish life!

There’s one item of clothing that I’ve always heard fashionistas worldwide rave, hoot, and holler about: a crisp white button-down shirt.  It’s said to be one of the timeless pieces a woman can have in her closet, and you can transform it into a wide variety of characters and moods – from Risky Business to Audrey Hepburn.  I, personally, am quite afraid to wear light colors for a variety of reasons (spills, the inevitable deodorant stains, and the possibility of washing me out), but sometimes you just have to put fear aside and embrace something truly fabulous.  There’s just something about a crisp, white men’s button-down shirt that makes you feel like you are the most fabulous woman of the face of the earth strolling down the streets of Rome a la Roman Holiday.  It’s definitely worth the small investment (I snagged my button-down at JC Penney while shopping for my husband), and the transformation can make your life!  It’s the cheapest vacation you’ll find 😉

I know blanket scarves have been huge this season, and I’ve always wanted one of those huge, gorgeous Zara scarves that look so fabulous and luxe – enter Target.  Target has been on point this season, and this scarf is positively perfect.  It’s not available online, but it’s definitely worth tracking down in store!  I’ve been trying to focus on practical winter-wear this year, and what’s more practical than scarves? And what’s next: a great statement coat.  Should I commit to the whole faux-fur thing?

This week’s #WIWW is inspired by the elusively elegant Chanel.  Now, Chanel isn’t exactly in my price range, but I was able to track down some particularly elegant and fabulous goodies this week!  Coco Chanel is famous for layering costume jewelry, and these two pieces from J. Crew and Sylvia Benson are the perfect balance of layering.  They’re hassle-free and quite gorgeous.  This H&M quilted faux leather skirt and these Zara tweed sneakers automatically make me think of Chanel’s signature 2.55 handbag and their famous tweed suits, and I can’t help but want to wear them together!  I spotted this striped v-neck sweater, a la Blair Eadie of course, at H&M – talk about a great way to snag the “it” sweater of the season!  I couldn’t escape the fall/winter fringe, and absolutely had to include this wine colored fringe bag – complete with chain strap.  Oh, Coco, your heart be still!

Frugal Chic Series: Invest Well

S&S invest well

With trends coming and going like leaves in a tornado, it can be easy to overlook some very important additions to your closet: the building blocks.  These are the pieces that you will keep for years and end up wearing over and over again – the bones of your wardrobe.  These pieces should be great quality that will last a long time, and in the long-run they are definitely worth dropping a bit of cash on.  The key here is focusing on which items you invest your limited budget in.

Now, I’m not saying that you should funnel all your money into these pieces (especially since they tend to be a good deal pricier than most things you’re probably used to buying), but I am saying that you can build a list of closet staples you need and work toward them.  Maybe it’s just me, but I would rather skip buying those three pairs of trendy earrings at Forever 21 if it means that I can save up to purchase a gorgeous cashmere sweater.

Now, there are many lists on the internet and in books of what constitutes a closet necessity, so I’m going to list some of the top contenders below:

  • Cashmere sweaters : They’re soft, cuddly and oh so opulent
  • Great fitting jeans : Because you will want to wear them every. single. day.
  • Men’s white button down shirt : For channeling a variety of personas from Tom Cruise to Jackie O
  • Little black dress : There’s a reason it’s so iconic
  • Ballet flats : Perfect for a girl on the go
  • A fabulous handbag (or two) : Because a fabulous woman needs a fabulous bag (or two… or three… or four…)
  • A classic heel : Goes with everything

A picture’s worth a thousand words, so here are some of the better closet-building guides I’ve found so far (Real Girl Glam had a great four part series that is being turned into an ebook – be on the lookout!):
