Some days you just have to kick back and relax, and today is finally the day! I’ve been non-stop busy for the past few months and it’s nice to be able to sit back, relax, and get ready to eat a life’s worth of food on Thursday. My recent button-down habit has translated into a cold weather flannel habit, and I have to say that they are perhaps the comfiest button-downs around! I’m on the search for a buffalo plaid one now, which was totally prompted by the buffalo plaid Instagram flood I witnessed the other day. Here’s hoping I can track one down soon!

DIY: Glitter Pumpkin

20141031-112713.jpg

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved carving pumpkins every year for Halloween.  Now, carving a pumpkin can be super fun, but sometimes we don’t always have time to get a pumpkin, the carving tools, scoop out the inside, find a stencil, etc. (you know the drill).  So, this year I thought I would mix it up a bit and decorate a pumpkin instead of carving one!  I’ve been inspired to make a simple decorative pumpkin that’s both classy and cute, which resulted in my beautiful gold glitter pumpkin.  This DIY is great for anyone who is short on time!

What You Need:

  • A pumpkin
  • Towel
  • Old newspaper or a drop cloth
  • Gold spray paint – after trying a bunch of different kinds, Rust-oleum metalllic spray paint is my personal favorite (it’s the paint I used for pretty much everything in my wedding)
  • Painter’s tape
  • Spray adhesive
  • Gold glitter

What I Did:

1) Wash the pumpkin

20141031-112631.jpg

Pumpkins almost always have some kind of mud or dirt film on them, so it’s important to wash your pumpkin and dry it thoroughly before even attempting to paint it or put any sort of adhesive on it.

2) Prep

20141031-112622.jpg

Old newspaper is perfect for spray painting your pumpkin on.  Make sure you have enough laid out so that it goes at least a foot around your pumpkin.

3) Paint your pumpkin

20141031-112644.jpg

I learned a ton about spray painting when planning my wedding, so here are a few tips for spray painting your pumpkin:

  • Always spray paint in a well ventilated area and read the instructions on the can before starting your project – if you have asthma, use a respirator
  • Shake the can for at least 30 seconds before spraying, even if you put the can down for only a few minutes.  If you don’t shake the can it can come out separated and you will most likely end up with the paint running down the side.
  • Hold the can about 8″ away from the surface of what you’re painting – if you’re closer, it might start to drip from over application, and if you’re farther away the paint will most likely end up in the wind
  • Make sure you apply the paint in light coats to avoid paint drips
  • Apply horizontally (left to right or vice versa) so the paint can make its way into the crevices

I ended up not painting the bottom of my pumpkin for the first coat, and turned it on its side to spray the bottom once the first coat had dried.  See the can for drying times.

4) Tape the stem

20141031-112652.jpg

I like to be able to use the stem as a handle and I hate getting a ton of glitter on my hands, so I decided to tape the stem off before applying the adhesive and glitter.  Make sure you use painters tape – anything else will most likely take all the paint off your pumpkin.

5) Apply the adhesive & glitter

20141031-112704.jpg

I only applied the adhesive to the top so the glitter would trickle down the sides of the pumpkin.  This step can get messy, but remember to treat spray adhesive just like spray paint when applying.  Extra fine glitter seemed to work best for this step because coarse glitter can have difficulty adhering to an object when it’s not laid flat.

6) Photo shoot!

When I first saw fashionistas and celebs donning daytime pajamas, I wasn’t on board for the trend, but I have found my own take on the fall trend that is comfortable and a bit less eccentric.  Though I am definitely a big fan of eccentric outfits, I figure a comfortable look called for a comfortable feeling to accompany it.  To achieve an everyday “pajama”, I paired slouchy pants with an oversized top.  To make sure I didn’t look completely bed-worthy, I made sure my top was more fitted in the arms and paired two different fabric types together- a knit and a shimmery polyester.  The crowning jewel on my daily pajama is a pair of smoking flats that are just comfortable enough to give a slipper vibe, yet bold enough to not be sentenced to a life of indoor pursuits.

This Christmas has been an odd one- it has snuck up on us, which is probably due to our hectic work schedules.  Thankfully, we will be spending the holiday with extended family this year despite the fact that we can’t travel back home.  We begin our trek out to the beautiful North Carolina “country” (I don’t know what else to call it) tomorrow, so Travis and I had an impromptu Christmas in his apartment today.  Our mini Christmas tree was decked out in all kinds of sparkly ornaments, and we got to open our few, but fantastic, presents.  I hope you all have a beautiful Christmas!

Sparkle and fur have always been some of my favorite fashion elements, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that this fall/winter has been characterized by opulence.  I have been able to break out some of my favorite pieces of clothing, one of which is this silver sparkly sweater.  I picked this baby up a year or so ago in an after Christmas sale (don’t you just love those?!) and have wanted to wear it in the daylight for a while.  Thankfully, this season has bolstered my confidence in wearing “night” clothing in the day time.  I layered my sparkly sweater over a black base layer and added another layer of wow with a statement necklace and a bright red lip.

Sidenote: If you are still searching for a great red lipstick/gloss that stays and won’t break your bank, Wet n Wild is great!  I was super skeptical when I first bought their Megalast liquid lip color, but I have been completely surprised by it’s lasting power and beautiful color.  One word of advice though: buy some clear gloss to put over it because it, like most long-wear lip colors, is sticky without something over it.

I recently entered a giveaway hosted by Gracefullee Made, another Triangle, North Carolina blogger, and ended up winning this super cute neutral chevron scarf from Glamplaza!  I built today’s outfit around it and stayed decidedly comfortable for my trip to State today.  I just got back from Florida, and my mom came up to visit for a bit 🙂  I just love the holidays!

Polka dots always make for a cheery winter, eh?  I’m finally done with finals at the seminary (and my time at the seminary for that matter), and I’m getting ready to seriously take on GRE prep.  I’m applying for a Masters in Textiles at NC State soon, and I cannot wait to send in my application!  I love the fashion industry and I am so excited to start my career in it as a merchandiser.

Rainy days always make me want to wear comfortable clothing, and this is my take on classic American comfort.  There’s nothing more American than a little red, white, and blue, and there’s just something about a camel coat that brings Jackie O to mind.  I combined a navy and white striped sweater with a gorgeous red scarf to achieve a patriotic feel without looking like it was the 4th of July.  I jazzed this outfit up a bit with a crystal statement necklace and two-tone handbag to add a little visual interest.

With finals almost over, and Christmas almost here, I can’t wait to add some new photo locations to my repertoire!  I’ve been exploring some locations around Raleigh lately, and I will have some new sights to share over the next week or so when I go down to Florida for wedding planning (Eeek! Less than 3 months until I’m MARRIED!)

Life has been a little crazy lately (and my wedding dress fitting is tomorrow!), but I can’t wait for a little holiday relaxation.  This break will be filled with wedding planning and work, but I will be so thankful for a reprieve.  Speaking of reprieves, I am thrilled to say that I am taking a semester off of school this Spring!  Sometimes you just need a break, right?

Winter Chiffon

The weather has been ridiculously back and forth in Raleigh lately, and today was particularly warm compared to the 40 degree days we’ve had.  I figured that today’s weather made it a perfect winter chiffon day (one of my favorite fabrics).  I’m trying to find the right balance between thick and light fabrics for the winters here, and I think I’m finally getting the hang of it.  The trick to wearing chiffon in the winter is layering – a key trick for most winter dressing.  In order to layer, yet still show off my gorgeous black chiffon tunic, I layered an open cardigan with and asymmetrical hem over it, making sure to avoid one that buttoned.  The flow of the sweater complements the flow of the chiffon top, and it adds a little ease to winter dressing.
